When is Turf Good for a Garden?

Many problems can go wrong with the lawn or garden at a residential home. The effect of winter on an area of a lawn as snow can lead to disease that can kill grass and leave brown spots. Another issue with lawns is too much sun and not enough water. Problems with a yard will often require using a variety of methods to restore a garden to its prior beauty.

The maintenance of a yard is important to ensure proper grass growth. Today, low maintenance is often done as a way to be more eco-friendly. The problem is this method involves leaving the grass clippings on the ground. This will increase moisture as the amount of air and sunlight to the grass is limited. The result is a potential for snow mould to occur. Mowing that is done throughout the summer will mean an abundance of grass clippings may be produced. These need to be raked from the lawn. Raking can also help to remove any dead material which will help keep the lawn healthy.

Laying new turf may be the best option for certain types of lawns. This is the quickest way to restore a lawn that has dead areas and patches of brown grass. One aspect to keep in mind is to properly remove the dead grass and prepare the ground. A rake will need to be used to level the soil and to make sure no stones lay close to the surface. Proper raking will be necessary to remove any air pockets.

One thing to keep in mind when laying new turf is to extend the new area about 10 centimetres. This is needed as the edges will typically die from a lack of water. Trimming will often be easier than needing to lay down extra turf later. Make sure to lay new turf so the joints do not align. The lawn will be much less likely to dry out and will end up stronger once the roots are established.

The new turf should be used lightly for the first few weeks. Water regularly to keep the turn green. The lawn will be ready to mow within four to five weeks. However, keep the height of the grass at a higher level through the first growing season.

Another option for a garden is to grow new grass from seed. This is less costly than turf, but the results will take up to five months. The best time to plant new grass seed in late fall or early spring. If you plan on any new garden areas in the spring, then planting grass may be an option.

One aspect to realize about new turf and newly planted seed is to use sufficient feed. This is crucial for anyone who wants to ensure their lawn remains green. However, feed should not be used on turf, which is newly laid or grass that is newly sown. The reason is the feed will kill the grass. You need to wait for the grass to be actively growing before applying feed.
