How to Spot Antiques

Antiques are useful because they can retain their value for a long period of time. These items are valuable during their period and have a specific production time. Normally, the production of an antique item will be stopped after the expiry of this duration. So, how can you spot them?

Is the piece rare?

When trying to spot antique, you should determine whether the item you have collected is rare or not. If the product is only owned by very few people, then odds are you have somewhere to get started. More often than not, antiques are objects that were only produced in small quantities because probably only the royalty or the superrich could afford them.

Does the piece have an atypical style?

If the item is from an artist or manufacturer that designed other products or works, but this piece is certainly less common or has an atypical style, then chances are that item is antique and is more valuable. Probable reasons why you may find collectible manufactured products or artworks include: a certain style or manufacture style is no longer in use or the materials required for the design of that particular style became scarce and new techniques and styles had to be found. This makes the previous versions of the items scarce and more desirable.

Are there any handmade signs

For general items, you need to examine the item more closely, including its design or construction. If possible, make sure that you classify the item so you can simplify your search. Try to establish whether a particular item is handmade. Signs, such as hand stitches, marks/scratches from hand tools or a slight lack of proportion, may show that the item was designed by a person rather than a machine. Although only a few items are still handmade nowadays, this can show that an item is antique.

Is the item signed?

If the piece is signed or contains a seal or special identification mark of the producer or artist, that definitely enhances its scarcity. Something that certainly looks unique is a genuine object, furniture item, or a rare painting. Some products that became excellent sellers and highly sought-after in different market segments were designed from cheaper materials to resemble the more expensive types. While these substandard material products might also be antiques, the originals will definitely be more valuable and more durable as well.

Do Research

You can identify future antiques by researching online product reviews, reading magazines and assessing style catalogues. You can also spot antiques by visiting exhibitions and fairs featuring new items. Add products created by prominent artists to your collection. You can also visit local museums to determine the products that are most likely to be valuable in the future. There are many resources available, both online and offline, which you can use to spot the various types of antiques. If you are struggling to identify an object, then you could use local appraisers, local dealers, and antique manuals from your local library or websites such as Jason’s Junk. Some of these resources have a lot of information and photos of the various types of items. You can narrow down your options by brand or category in order to identify an object correctly.

The Advantages of Commercial Led Lights

Commercial places require lots of lighting to illuminate their large premises. High level of illumination is necessary at such places because it looks good and adds a premium value to the place. Commercial establishments that are not properly illuminated look dull. Customers and clients find something amiss but cannot tell the reason. While effective lighting plays an important role in the success of a commercial establishment it is important to use latest lighting solutions. More and more business owners are now giving preference to commercial LED lights because of various advantages.

Energy Saving

This is the biggest benefit of using commercial LED lights. Light Emitting Diode or LED consumes lower amount of energy compared to other types of lights. It offers high energy efficiency which helps save money in the energy cost. The savings can be significant over other types of lightings considering the fact that commercial places have large number of lighting fixtures. The best thing about LED’s is that the energy saving is achieved without compromising on the lighting quality.

Cool Lighting

Commercial LED lights do not emit heat when in use. This factor can have significant impact on the energy bills of a commercial establishment because such places pay high energy bills due to high level of air conditioning. It does not make sense to cool an area and at the same time use lights like incandescent bulbs that heat up the area. The cool lighting property of LED means that it converts maximum amount of energy into light. That is not the case with other types of lighting where a big part of energy is wasted in the form of heat.

Low Maintenance Cost

The maintenance cost of other types of lighting solutions can be significant, especially for large commercial places where hundreds of bulbs are installed. A good number of electricians are needed to maintain this type of lighting system. Such costs can be reduced to a great extent by using LED lights. These lights are durable and do not require frequent replacements. High quality LED light bulbs can last as long as 50,000 hours. That is very high considering that an incandescent bulb lasts only 10,000 hours and a CFL lasts only 30,000 hours.

Instant Light

Fluorescent lights take up a few seconds to warm before they provide their standard level of lighting. On the other hand, LED lights do not require any warm up. They light up to their full brightness immediately. No time is wasted in waiting for the light to warm up. The reason behind this is that the LED light converts most of the energy into light and not into heat.

No Toxic Content

LED lights do not contain any toxic materials like mercury. It is an environment friendly product and can be used safely in all types of commercial settings.

With so many advantages and cost savings, it is no wonder that most business places now prefer LED lights over other types of lights. The increasing demand in this sector means there is a big market for such products and so manufacturers now offer a wide range of commercial LED lights for every type of requirements.

Just a few steps can make all the difference to a tired garden

Sometimes a garden that has fallen into disrepair may need a complete overhaul to revive it. However, it doesn’t always take such a drastic move – a few smaller changes can reap great rewards in rejuvenating the space. The garden featured here is a case in point: it needed some renovation to bring it back to life. The rear gate leads through a hole in the hedge on to a path, which directly overlooks Redland station.

During the day it is possible to glimpse the trains pulling to a halt at the platform. Apart from this, the garden is very peaceful and also well sheltered. However, it had become run down and the structure of retaining beds was crumbling. The side beds were ill defined and the garden was semi-shaded due to the large rear hedge. Also the materials used to build the small retaining walls were a mixture of broken concrete and stone. The stone was laid dry and had lost the will to stand up! Mixed with broken concrete slabs, it looked a mess. Once we had taken down the walls and sifted out the concrete, we decided to reuse the stone, which was in good condition.

Putting in sound footings, we relaid the stone using mortar placed to the rear of the wall, leaving the front face free of cement. This gives the impression of a drystone wall, but adds the strength we needed to support the next layer. Over the top of the stone we fixed oak sleepers to complete the walls. In the original garden, a set of concrete steps ran through to the rear gate. We removed these and combined the oak sleeper cappings to form a flight of oak steps. The sleepers at ground level run around the sides of the garden to form small raised planters. This allowed the beds to be topped up with fresh soil. It also lifts the plants up a little closer to the precious light. Around the edges of the garden we laid a stepping stone path. This gives dry access to the rear gate and also to the side beds, which helps with easy maintenance.

The grass was levelled and returfed. Letting the grass grow between the slabs softens their impact.
The house has a large picture window overlooking the garden from the lounge. Our client wanted to retain that view, but liked the idea of some planting close to the house to act as a filter through which to view the main garden. We built an oak raised planter under the window to take tall perennials and grasses.

The overall aim of the design was to give the garden a softer feel and a more unified look. The combination of stone and wood has helped to give the structure an organic feel. By using the oak to wrap around the garden and also to act as steps, the use of one natural material sets a theme, and
helps to pull the garden together

Making a Paperweight

Making a paperweight has not ever been this easy! This methodology is affordable and may be accustomed to produce *mostly* perishable paperweights.

Step 1:

Gather your materials together.

Step 2:

Now you have your materials prepared begin making the lower part of the paper weight with the paper. This can be accustomed to hold the gram weight.

•           To create the lower half of this box begin with a sq. piece of paper. The scale of the paper can amend the scale of your weight. Additionally make certain that after its created it'll be ready to hold your gram weights. I like to recommend a 6" by 6" (15cm by 15cm) piece.

•           Place the sheet so the corners face up, down, left, and right. Then create 2 folds within the paper, one going from the higher left facet to the lower right and therefore the different going from the higher right to the lower left. Make certain that the creases on these 2 folds are each "mountain fold". In different words once you fold the paper fold it off from you and not towards you.

•           Now by utilising these creases as guide lines fold the corners of the sq. piece of paper in towards the middle making a smaller sq.. Note: don't worry if the sides won’t line up precise they hardly ever do.

•           Now fold the left and right sides of you new sq. into the middle then do an equivalent for the highest and bottom sides. This can produce a smaller sq.. Next begin to unfold this new small sq..

•           Continue to unfold the sq. till you're back to the purpose wherever you had rolled up the corners of your original piece of paper into the middle. Next, unfold the highest and bottom triangles but not the left and right ones.

•           Now you must have a fancy form consisting of a sq. middle and a triangle at the highest and bottom. Grab the section wherever the Triangle and sq. components meet and fold the crease in to make a corner. Do the same on the opposite facet of this triangle. Then carry the Triangle up to make the primary facet of your box.

•           Be certain to carry the quarter piece that's getting to be another facet of this box. Repeat Step 2 with the opposite triangle. Once either side is upright you must notice that there's a bit additional on the highest and bottom sides. Fold this additional paper into the box to bolster these sides folding the Triangle tip out as a part of all-time low of the box.

Step 3:

Now that the primary section of your cube has been created add some gram weights, which may be purchased on-line or on the high street at a good array of locations, into the box. Note: make certain to not purchase weights that are giant or have hooks on them as this can tear the paper cube.

•           optional: you'll want to make sure the box open and not create a canopy however if you want to cover the weights simply follow steps 2.1 through to.7 to make another box and place that box over the lower part one to make a canopy. Note: you'll have to create the second box slightly larger to suit it over your initial.

Step 4:

Now place your recently created weight wherever it's required you'll additionally embellish it by drawing on that with a pen or use artistic production paper for styles to create it a bit more merry.

When a green garden just isn’t enough in winter

In Winter, with short daytime, we are all crying out for more light and colour in our lives. The days are longer, but it seems to happen at a grindingly slow pace. When the sun is out, the low-angled light can have a wonderful effect, lighting up any berried plants, such as rose hips and crab apple crops. The autumn leaves are long gone and, apart from the premature appearance of some early blossoms because of the mild weather, we will have to
wait till February or March for some proper spring growth.

However, while we wait for the blue sky and new green shoots to arrive, there are things you can do to brighten up the garden at this time of year. Paint is a wonderful and underused product outdoors. It is also potentially an easily abused medium if its use is not properly thought through. Colour fashions will come and go, but, with a combination of planting and applied colours, you can add life to a dull corner.

Wood stain is now available in a spectrum of colours and can be applied to any timber structure in the garden. My advice would be to keep it subtle and resist the temptation to apply deep blue to all your fences. Small splashes of colour work far more effectively. A small pergola or arch will take stain well and, even with a clematis or wisteria to mask the full effect, you’ll still see glimpses of the underlying colour as the winter sun catches it.

An old wall which may be beyond rescue can be smartened up with a splash of masonry paint, which can help set off anything planted in front. In this garden, above, an old and badly constructed block wall was painted terracotta red To contrast with this, the new walls retaining the lower terraces were painted tw different shades of blue. Existing Victorian terracotta tiles were used to cap the wall in order to tie in with the rear wall.

This type of rendered block wall is a cheap method of retaining soil in a sloping garden and, with the judicial use of paint, can add colour and light to a semi shady area. Another method to cheer up a dark corner is to use mosaics. In this example, above right, mosaics were used to decorate four corners of a town courtyard garden. With the themes of earth, fire, water and air, we included the mosaics along with glass brick lighting and a grid of Victorian paving framing stone slabs.

In this case, the customers were a couple who were visually impaired and the paving pattern and lighting helped them navigate the space as well as enjoy added colour. So, keep it simple, keep it light and you can brush away those deep winter blues.

Shake off the blues in the cool outdoors

MANY of the gardens we design in Bristol are for Victorian properties. They tend to be small, as the Victorians used public parks more than gardens for their leisure, but today we place more value on the space behind our houses, however small. Indeed, a room-sized garden can be converted into an intimate outdoor space, which can be enjoyed most of the year.

In this garden, a garage had been added to the rear, which reduced the size even further, so we were dealing with a space smaller than the average living room! Designing for small spaces is a challenge. We decided to raise the planting beds and add colour as a way of brightening the limited space. Our customer had already been thinking about possible designs, and had some ideas. We liked his suggestions and incorporated them into a cohesive design.

We presented a 3D plan, which included three blue box planters against the north-facing wall. Between these, we fitted two oak sleeper bench seats. Adding occasional seating in a small garden makes it an inviting place to pop out for a quick coffee on dry days. By raising the planting on this shady side of the garden, the plants will also get more light. Any kind of lawn was ruled out and a circular patio was proposed.

The circle is dissected by a deck path, which leads from the side gate. This path runs along the central axis of the three blue planters, the symmetry helping to tie these three elements together. In the sunny rear corner of the garden, a rendered planter curves around the perimeter of the circle. Set into this feature is a small oak seat, which turns the planter into a garden sofa, and acts as a relaxed foil to the more formal layout of the rest of the space. A pergola frames the entrance to the garden and divides the main garden from the side alley. This pergola continues across the back of the house, helping to break up the plain, rendered facade.

Grey stepping stones lead through chipped Cotswold stone gravel to the rear garage door. These square grey stones have been purposely cut where they meet the patio to help emphasise the circular theme. Our customer also had a collection of decorative Turkish tiles and wanted to include these in the plan. We chose to set some tiles into plain white render either side of the garden gate. We also included a carved stone decoration mounted on a terracotta wall, and framed a simple garden trellis.

Colour plays an important role in this garden. With blue and terracotta setting the theme and combining well with the various greens of the planting, the colours help to transform a drab back yard into a cheerful outdoor room.

Slopes aren’t obstacles – they’re opportunities!

All Gardens was established in Dulwich 23 years ago by Tom Phillips, who moved to Bristol in 1990. Here, he describes creating a haven for a Bristol artist.

MANY gardens in Bristol are lying on sloping ground. This provides a challenge to the garden designer, as well as an opportunity to sculpt the ground in a creative and interesting way. Our client, 79-year old Eileen, had just relocated to Bristol from the Wirral. Her new house was designed to a high specification and she wanted her garden to match.

As an established artist she was open to the idea of colour in the garden. The initial design sketched out at our first meeting was thought to be on the right lines and a three-dimensional sketch was worked up to show the changes in levels and a proposal of the colour scheme. Work started in July of 2011 and was completed late August with a budget of £15,000.

Due to tight access via external steps, 18 tons of soil had to be bagged and transported to three skips using a conveyor belt. Similarly, all sand and blockwork was brought into the garden by the same method. Initially we had proposed beach cobbles for the lower garden. Even with a stepping stone path running through it I realised that this surface was unsuitable. We had used artificial lawn in a couple of projects where grass was not possible due to heavy shade. Initially reticent, I was very impressed with the quality of the new grass products and so suggested one of these as an alternative and Eileen, always very open to new ideas, went with it.

We had to incorporate three antique terracotta planters into the design and the clash of old classic pots with modern false grass gives the garden a surreal quality. The planting was crucial. I chose plants to compliment and contrast with the bold blues finally chosen for the walls. Orange and yellow flowering plants were chosen in places where they could be bold compliments to the blues. When the foliage develops, the differing tones of green will add a calming layer which will soften some of the walls.

The other aspect of the planting design was to incorporate some height, with trees to provide privac screening from neighbours while not blocking the views from the garden. A small early flowering cherry and dwarf apple were chosen for the upper garden and a wisteria grown on tension wires will provide a supple summer screen to the house directly behind.

Designing for someone who has an open mind to most ideas is a delight. Often through existing structures. ie. sheds and extensions, the designer is juggling with a list of ingredients to help busy people make the most of their garden space. This is challenging but rewarding when a final plan works. In Eileen’s case she wanted something attractive to look at and a place in the sun to enjoy her views.

We gave her a built-in oak bench surrounded with plants, an evergreen lawn she never needs to cut and flowers we hope will paint their own pictures through the coming seasons.

Using a Letting Agency - Pros and Cons

Alright I can start off by making puns of pros and cons when it comes to buying a proper through a letting agency. Hiring a letting agency is always taken for granted by many home buyers. The truth is that if you hire a letting agency to officiate the selling of your real estate or to help you purchase your home is one perfect move. Using letting agency sounds cool but you can sell your home without using these real estate agents. You can choose to sell you home on your own, but remember there are always pros of having aletting agency and by reading through you will get to know the importance of having a letting agency.

Selling your home can be a difficult task; this is because there is a lot of money being involved in the process.  Your financial status and your emotions always contribute to the selling of a property. Though other people sell because they have found a new place to move to,others sell their homes because of economic issues. It is always good to educate yourself about the process so that you cannot look like a newbie. Some of the basics information that you should know is the lawsuit and the procedures of buying a real estate.

The pros of using aletting agency

Using a letting agency is ideal because they have the certification about the process of selling and buying a home.  So it is worth hiring a person who has experience and knows about the market. A letting agency will also do all the procedures will you sit back and watch.

A letting agency is detached with all the information about personal aspect of the sale. Also, if you are buying the house aletting agencywill give you the correct advice based on their experience and their honesty.

Most of the agents will help you decide on the market value of your house. So there will be no risk of pricing your house above the market value.  They are always there to help you not to make mistakes about selling your home.

Letting agencies will help you market your house and they will be always there to show off your house to the buyers while you are away. They also give you advice on legal aspects, they can also handle negotiations on your behalf a letting agency is always a great resource when there is a difficult sale.

The cons of using letting agency

Agents that you may get while buying your property may be inexperienced and they may not market your home the way you want. They also charge a fee that is not reasonable and there is always a percentage which 5% to 7% oftotal amount sale.

Agents can list the price your home the way they want so long has they get paid. They may even set a lower price so that they can get their commission quick.

You will not be dealing with the buyers yourself so this looks impersonal and it may affect the price of your property.

What are the benefits of LED kitchen lighting?

Both man, animals and plans cannot survive if there was no source of light completely. Human beings tend to need light more than any other living organisms since his need for light are not only primary but also secondary and even tertiary. Unlike other animals which either needs the night to be active or the daylight, human beings at times need both.

The natural sources of energy are at times not enough. This is the reason why scientists invented electricity while Thomas Edison came up with the electric lamp that emits light. Today, there are several other forms of devices that emit light. Light Emitting Diodes are just some of them. People may not be aware that these do not work the same way the normal bulbs work but all in all, all of them produce light.

The construction of houses may be one difficult task but many have managed to do that. However, there are times when one has a house that cost him relatively less money in comparison to another expensive maisonette but his is outstanding simply because he invested his time in giving the house good finishes. Among these finishes are the lighting systems in some of the rooms in the house. Although all the rooms are usually given attention when it comes to modern finishes installations, the bathroom, toilet and kitchen are given the most attention.

Kitchen lighting is just wonderful if the use of LED lights is employed. There are many LED lighting systems but the most outstanding ones are those that have been designed to give different forms of light from several LEDs. These LEDs are then housed in the same cover making it to appear as if it is a single source of light.

Other than just the good appearance of the LED lighting for kitchens, there is also the advantage of having a brighter light being emitted. It is of less value if you have a lighting system that is of great appearance but dull. This can lead to users developing some eye complications among others negative effects. The LED kitchen lighting is bright enough to keep your kitchen bright. When you are cooking in your kitchen, you really don’t want to make any errors in terms of mixing ingredients. LED lights make the whole kitchen to be visible enough to allow you follow the cooking process.

Not only are the LED lights installed in the kitchen as a whole but they can also be installed in the kitchen cupboards. Most of the cupboards with these facilities come when the LED lights are already fixed but you can also fix yours. The normal lights cannot be installed in cupboards.

The economic part of it is also of great need. The continuous increase of electric bills today makes life to become more and more expensive. Although it may be slightly more expensive to install the LED lights in your kitchen, running them is much cheaper than running these other forms of lighting systems. They use less electric energy thereby leading to a reduced monthly expenditure.

How is a Square Garden Perfect for a Round Lawn?

Tom Phillips from All Garden Designs explains...

The garden is often the last project tackled when refurbishing a home. This was the case here, where our clients had recently finished their living/ garden room and were finally ready to tackle the outside space. The living room overlooked the whole garden and they wanted a garden to complement it. Some years previously, the garden had been extended by acquiring extra land, but the two spaces had not been effectively combined.

There was a large Swiss-style timber chalet, which took up one corner of the garden, and a large shed positioned close to the house in another corner. We decided to remove the chalet completely as it was never used. The shed was considered too large, so we rebuilt it, reducing the size and adding a new cedar shingle roof and high level glazing to let in light without compromising security.

The new shed made maximum use of a sunny corner and left us enough room in front to put a pond, which is accessed via an oak sleeper bridge. The plants at the back of the pond help to soften the outline of the shed. We then positioned a circular patio in the far corner of the garden. Our clients wanted a shady sitting area and we included a fan pergola over it, which a wisteria could climb.
Nearer the house we planned a raised deck, which is reached from the ground floor by two steps.

The deck fans out from the side door of the house around the outside of a new extension and ending at a small stone patio, which gets sun for most of the day. A raised oak sleeper bed and vertical timber boarding help screen the neighbour’s brick garage on this side of the garden. In front of the deck are two symmetrical oak planters and running between them is the gravelled entrance to the central lawn. In the planters are mostly grasses and small shrubs, which help to soften the extension.

The front of the oak beds are curved to match the circular shape of the lawn and we struggled to find suitably-shaped wood to cap them. After an extensive search of Bendry Brothers’ timber supplies, we chose a perfectly- shaped oak beam and had it sliced to produce two identical capping pieces, one for each bed. They double up as seating. Bricks edge the circular lawn, which helps keep it neat when mowing, and around the lawn are two gravel areas, one of which is planted with grasses.

We were able to lay a completely circular lawn because the garden is square shaped, which gives a
magnified feeling of space. It also leaves corners of the garden (which are often underused) as ideal spots for the shed and sitting areas. Space is always at a premium in urban gardens and we have used this trick many times to create a calm clearing in the “urban jungle”.
